Here I’m answering some common questions that I get from parents about what to expect with personality portraits for kids – from clothing choices to how the sessions will go, keep reading to see what to expect and how to get ready!
As parents, we understand how quickly kids change before our eyes. What better way to capture who they are than with personality portraits for your kids? These sessions are designed to be all about each child or teen and reflect what makes them so amazing.
What should I have my child wear for personality portraits?
First and foremost, they should wear something that they are comfortable with. It will be obvious in their photos if they are uncomfortable and fidgeting with their outfits.
I generally recommend avoiding character/graphic T’s. However, if that’s what your child insists on wearing, by all means, roll with it! After all, these portraits are meant to showcase their personality and who they are right now.
Beyond that, I suggest avoiding neon colors. Also keep in mind that the background will likely be solid black, possibly white.
How long does a kids personality portrait session last?
Each session slot will be for 10 minutes, but we will spend 5-7 minutes taking photos. The time allowance gives us wiggle room for warming up to getting their photo taken and a quick break for me to reset between each kiddo.
Seriously, just 5-7 minutes? Seriously! We will get a great selection of photos for you in that short amount of time!
I’m worried about my child not wanting to get their picture taken. How do you work with kids that don’t want to participate?
Yep, I hear you. I’ve had the same concerns myself, but I’m here to tell you – don’t sweat it. I’ve had kids who wanted nothing to do with getting their photo taken. But, we made it happen and still captured their personality beautifully!
My baby can’t sit up on their own just yet. Is it still okay for me to book a personality portrait session?
It depends. I can’t guarantee that the studio space I secure will have any sort of couch or other objects to prop them up. These sessions are meant for kids who can sit or stand unassisted, but please reach out to chat about your specific child!
On that note, I do offer milestone sessions for babies! You can find information about those on my website here: Baby milestone sessions with Western Sky Photography
Is it okay if they bring their favorite toy / stuffed animal?
Absolutely! In fact, if they’re inseparable from a certain object, we’re going to get better pictures of them with it than without.
Will you be able to take a few personality portraits of all of my children together?
YES! Each child will need to sign up for a time slot, but sibling photos are definitely a must-have. We will likely get photos of them together first. I’ve found that when the younger sibling gets a few pictures together with their older siblings first, they tend to warm up to me faster and are more apt to open up for their individual portraits.
Remember – these sessions are not just about getting an updated picture of your child; it’s about embracing who they are and celebrating what makes them unique.
Have a question that wasn’t answered here? Please ask! I want to make this experience easy, fun, and stress-free for both kids and parents.
