There’s nothing like summer around Tacoma! Nearly perfect summer temps, (mostly) blue skies, tall trees, and some form of water only a short drive away from pretty much anywhere. That means there are endless options for where we land to take summer family photos!
Summer is a great time to get those family photos in for many reasons. The best reason? Bad weather is rarely going to be an issue.
There are sooo many beautiful spots around here – keep scrolling to see my favorite places to meet up for photos!
Nothing says ‘summer family photos’ like the beach
We are super lucky to have lots of options for the beach around here – who needs palm trees?
Since I’m based in Tacoma, places like Chambers Bay and Owen Beach top the list.
Not far from Tacoma is Vashon Island if you’re up for a ferry ride and a short ride over to Point Robinson Lighthouse. Technically on Maury Island, you’ll find a cool, small lighthouse (duh) and plenty of iconic driftwood.
If you want a true, ocean-is-all-you-can-see-from-the-shore beach family session, Westport is the perfect little beach town to venture out to.
Other really good spots farther north up the coast include Ruby Beach, Kalaloch, and even around La Push.
(I also love the northern Oregon Coast – sure it’s not in Washington, but I couldn’t write this without giving it a shout out!)
Prefer the trees? These parks around Tacoma are for you.
Chambers Bay – a mix of rocky shoreline and wide open grassy fields, this is hands down one of the best places in Tacoma for summer family photos. The light at sunset is simply gorgeous *chef’s kiss*
Point Defiance Park – tried and true, there’s something for every family here. We can hang out by the pond or meet at Owen Beach (another rocky shoreline). Or, we can take an easy hike through the forest to find THE spot for your summer family photos.
Fort Steilacoom Park – open fields, plenty of trees, room to run around for the kids and even a pond to explore – another spot that has something for every family
Up for an adventure? Mount Rainier National Park is calling for your summer family photos (and I’d love to meet you there!)
The only downside is that this national park can get quite busy in the summer. But literally everything else about it is an upside!
Heading up to Paradise in the later weeks of summer will reward us with the greenest pines, wildflower fields, and front row views of that gorgeous mountain of ours.
Another option on the other side of the park is Tipsoo Lake. It’s the perfect backdrop of mountains and tall pines surrounding a serene lake.
I’m sure there are other great places for photos that I haven’t yet explored – I’d love to hear about them!
If you get nothing else from reading this, I hope it’s that scheduling your family photos doesn’t have to wait until the fall. There are tons of options of where we can meet with little worry about having to reschedule for weather – win win!
