Choosing what to wear for Tacoma family photos is an important decision, but one that doesn’t have to be stressful. I’ve put together this quick guide that will help steer you in the right direction and provide some inspiration to make your family photos reflect your style.

To make it easy, pick mom’s outfit first before everyone else’s outfits

Choose an outfit that you feel your best in, and let the choices for everyone else fall accordingly. We are going to celebrate the fact that a) you are in the photos and b) it’s not in the form of a selfie! 😉 When you feel great in what you’re wearing, it really does come through beautifully in your photos.

Focus on coordinating instead of matching when choosing what to wear for family photos

But, isn’t coordinating and matching kinda the same thing? Nope! 🙂

When I say matching, I’m referring to everyone wearing the same color. Coordinating leans on complimentary colors and allows each family member to have an outfit that fits their personality.

  • Pick a color palette, usually 2-3 coordinating colors. If in doubt, neutrals (creams, grays, light brown) are a good go-to.
  • Solid colors are always a winner. Try to avoid really busy patterns (florals for girls are usually okay).
  • It’s best to say no to the logo/character tees (even for kids)
  • Accessories are an easy way to incorporate the color scheme you’re going for
  • Layering clothes or using different textures is a great way to add character and depth to an otherwise simple outfit.

Keep your choices true to your style for family photo outfits

To put it simply, if you aren’t a ‘boho’ style family, don’t pick that style to wear for your family photos. You can be true to your style and personality without dressing super formal, hopping on the latest trends just for the sake of photos, or dressing in athletic wear. But if that’s you, that’s what you should do! Embracing this will lead to vibrant images that represent your family in an authentic way. Comfortable and relaxed is the goal!

Comfort is key!

I do want to emphasize that wearing things you are comfortable in and that align with your personal style will help result in relaxed, genuine photos. Not only are we as adults more relaxed and confident when we choose clothes that fit our style, but so are our kids. Nobody likes to be fidgeting with clothes and making sure everything is perfectly in place during a shoot 🙂

If you’ve already booked a session with me, I can’t wait to see what you choose! Be sure to reach out if you need help deciding on specific pieces.
