Having a new baby at home is such an exciting time, one that I hope as a mom you are truly soaking up before you blink. Preparing for in-home newborn photos can feel stressful, but I’m here to tell you all the reasons why it won’t be!
My goal is for the entire process to be as stress-free as possible – you just brought a new life into the world!
I’ve been there myself – worried about what the house looks like, choosing outfits, wondering if the toddler will cooperate, etc. But – I’m here to tell you there is very little that you need to do to prepare for baby’s first photoshoot, and none of the above things will hinder getting beautiful photos.
My focus, aside from the baby, is going to be showing the deep love and connection you and your family have for this wonderfully new little addition.
To prepare for in-home newborn photos, ask your photographer where they usually like to take photos
The most common places I use in home for photos of baby and the family are in the living room and the baby’s nursery and/or the master bedroom. These are simply the spots that most often have the best natural lighting.
You don’t need to clean your house to prepare for in-home newborn photos
“*gasp* …are you sure??”
YES – you don’t need to have a spotless house.
I repeat – you do not need to deep clean before I come over!
BUT – I do recommend picking up the extra “stuff” that may be in those spaces you’ll likely be taking photos. You can temporarily move them to another room we won’t be using, or throw things in a laundry basket temporarily to make quick work of it. I am also more than happy to help you do this if we end up in a space you weren’t anticipating!
About a week before your session, help prepare siblings for your in-home newborn session
Make sure you talk about the upcoming photo shoot with them a few times before I come over . This usually helps them warm up to the idea of me taking their picture a little faster, especially for those that are more on the shy side.
The last think to do when preparing for in-home newborn photos is to lay out everyone’s outfits the night before
Having these things ready is just one less thing you’ll need to do the morning of your newborn session.
With a lifestyle newborn session, I do not bring any sort of props with me to use. We use the arms of mom/dad/siblings and the crib, bed, or couch – that’s it!
In addition to having the outfits laid out, make sure to have tried them on a few days earlier to make sure they fit so you are not scrambling to find something else right before I arrive.
I hope that gives you a better idea of how to prepare for a newborn session in your home. We will work together to make the experience a relaxing and even fun morning for everyone!
