What exactly is lifestyle newborn and family photography? I try not to throw around industry terms without explaining what I mean, and lately I’ve felt like the term “lifestyle” falls into that category.
Lifestyle newborn and family photography focuses on connection over perfection
It’s a focus on the connection between family members rather than on making things look perfect, resulting meaningful images that have more of a documentary feel to them.
Lifestyle photography captures the essence of the moment. Your family photos should reflect your personality and the realness of your dynamics, not an overposed or ingenuine version of it. But, that doesn’t mean I won’t pose you – it just won’t be in the traditional sense of the term for every single picture.
I will guide you into various positions and have you interact with each other with prompts, but the last thing I want is for you to look stiff and unnatural. You can expect to laugh, maybe dance a little, and just enjoy each other as I capture the moments unfolding in front of the camera. I will encourage you to focus on each other rather than looking my direction.
Is there a difference between lifestyle newborn photography and lifestyle family photography?
Aside from the location (in your home vs outdoors), there isn’t one!
Families
With a lifestyle family session, we will (most likely) be exploring the location, which lends to beautiful and authentic images of your family interacting with one another. I will work with you to pick a location that best matches your style and family dynamic. If we take things inside your home, it will be the same concept but just inside (or outside around your home).
Newborns
We will be picking a couple of spots in your house with the best light and making the most out of them. The adoration for the newest member of the family will be the focus of attention and approached with the same style a family session. I will guide you into various “poses” that give us the most natural interactions with the baby, but I won’t always be asking you to look at the camera.I discuss more details in another post about what to expect with a newborn session, but I use only natural light and will not have any props with me, nor will I mold the baby into any specific poses during the session. Babies unfold themselves in the most adorable ways when they are left to do so.
Bottom line – lifestyle photography tells your story.
It’s a focus on the connection between family members rather than on making things look perfect, resulting in authentic and meaningful images that have more of a documentary feel to them.
No matter what the occasion or who is in the photos, my goal with lifestyle sessions is for them to be simple, smooth, and fun!
