I'm ashley!

I'm a newborn and family photographer based in Tacoma, WA. I love working with new and growing laid-back families who are comfortable with the imperfect and love doing life with their people.

hello,

Ready to get on my calendar?

let's get started >

To me, newborn photos are all about keeping it simple and real – that’s why I choose to approach newborn photography without props. Skipping the props helps me capture moments that are natural and full of heart, making photos that will always feel timeless and true. In this post, I’ll share more about why I don’t use props during newborn sessions and how this approach helps me focus on what really matters—your baby and those special first few weeks with them at home.

Newborn photography without props or posing allows for natural moments to unfold

While beautiful in it’s own right, there is nothing natural about a “frog” or “taco” pose you often see in posed newborn photography. Nor will your baby ever find themselves lounging in a hammock in the forest 😉

When I photograph a new baby, my main focus is to capture the real, unfiltered moments that tell your story of adding a member to your family. Without props, I can focus on the way a baby naturally unfolds and those sweet snuggles with mom and dad. These natural moments just aren’t there when you have elaborate setups or props.

The tiny details are easy to highlight

Even as fresh newborns, each one has their own special quirks. Some babies are super calm and sleepy, while others are wide awake and wiggling. Without props, I can zoom in on those precious little details—like the way a newborn stretches their fingers or opens their eyes wide in surprise. When props are involved, it’s easy to lose sight of these tiny moments. Without props, the photos become more about who they are, even in those early days.

There is a timeless aesthetic when props aren’t used for newborn photos

A minimalistic approach keeps the photos clean and timeless. Unlike colorful or trendy props that may feel outdated as time passes, simple images will always be something you’ll love. A soft blanket, natural light, and the simple comfort of your home can create stunning photos that draw all attention to the baby. The end result is a set of images that parents will cherish for years, without thinking, “Why did we have them put the baby in a bucket?”

There is an emphasis on comfort and connection in newborn photos without props

Your family’s home adds a layer of meaning that props just can’t replace. It tells a story of your family at this moment in your lives—the nursery you put careful thought into decorating, the cozy chair where late-night feedings happen, or the bed where everyone piles on for snuggles. These personal details create a warm backdrop that make the photos even more special.

When I don’t have to fuss with arranging props or changing scenes, I can focus on the interactions that matter most. Seeing a new mom and dad gaze at their baby or an older sibling holding the newborn’s tiny hand is worth so much more than any setup could offer.

These moments are full of emotion, and when props are out of the picture, I can capture the raw love and connection that make those early days with your baby unforgettable.

Choosing a photographer who doesn’t use props means choosing authenticity and timeless beauty. It’s about capturing the love, the connection, and those tiny details that make your baby one-of-a-kind. When props are out of the way, there’s space for real moments and meaningful memories that will last a lifetime. At the end of the day, it’s your baby’s story we’re telling, and that’s more special than any setup could ever be.
